A Kaleidoscope Mural and Sneak Peak at a Basement Design

Colorful Mural Design

I’m excited to share with you a fun mural that I painted with a client in the basement of her home. It accompanies the basement design work I also helped her with.

In the basement, we chose carpet, tile, counters, and paint for all the rooms.  Today you’ll get a sneak peek in this post before the final reveal, which will be after we pull together all the furnishings.

Kaleidoscope Painted Mural

We started out choosing the fixed finishes such as carpet, tile, and paint. The carpet is a great multi-colored with gray, tans, and white, you can see a little of it in the photo of the mural above. A great tie-in to the wood look tile that is in the entertainment area, seen below.

Wood-look tile

The main bathroom was a favorite. A porcelain tile was chosen, matt for the floors and glossy for the shower. Using all the same tiles in the space allows for a larger feel. The shower turned out amazing. I recommended darker quartz for the vanity. Overall this simple look is classic and timeless. The paint color is  Pediment from Benjamin Moore.

Benjamin Moore Conservative Gray

A dark stain was applied to the handrail and bookshelves, I requested ebony and the closest match to the flooring in the entertainment center.  The main paint color for the basement design is Conservative Gray from Benjamin Moore, and it is absolutely perfect!

Kitchen

The entertainment kitchen area is so much fun! My client loved the color of these glass tiles to go along with the shake cabinets she chose for the kitchen.

Bathroom

The same quartz countertops that we used in the bathroom were installed in the kitchen. The plan is to add a wood peel and stick wall treatment to the back of the wall to be used as a backdrop for the dartboard (which you can’t see from this angle). This is an in-process shot (I’ll share the full basement reveal once we finish up the decor!) But I love how the tile color and mural pull so much color into space!

In progress basement remodel

The backs of the entertainment cabinets will be painted to play off the mural. The mural color was inspired by the tile in the room, and my client’s desire for a playful space. After looking at some murals, I created 3 mural designs for her on photoshop and she chose the one with the most color! (See the three mural designs below) I just love how it turned out! She has ordered a shuffleboard table to be placed in front of the mural.

Option 3 for Wall Mural

A couch and some finishing touches will be added to space. We have discussed using family-friendly materials that will stand the test of time. A teal blue couch is ideal so we are on the lookout for a great couch for space.

Here are a few in-process photos of the mural. There are 5 colors, with each of the colors being used twice except one. Although I didn’t like the original color I chose for the top triangle so after some thought it was left as the main wall color. With all the other colors, it’s hard to even notice this!  I like how it pulls the wall color back into the mural, plus it is the only color that is not duplicated.

Tips and tricks for painting a mural.

1) design it first on photoshop or an online program. I took a photo of the wall and then laid out the design. Three design murals I designed are posted above.

2) Consider the size of the wall. Originally I looked for a peel and stick mural for this space but since it was so large – nothing would fit unless it was custom, and that is expensive! (wall size of this basement design wall is…)

3). Use frog tape. I also caulk a light line on the take before painting. This covers any overage of paint and also creates a smooth line. Banyon Bridges has said that putting water on the tape works too, can anyone confirm this?

Make Changes and Touch up

1) you don’t have to use your original design. Once it is up to you probably will notice something you’d like to change, don’t worry about that! It will never be 100% right, it is important to make a decision and move on.

2) Touch up – There will be bleed-through and mistakes, so the most important part of this is touch-up! My client had to go over the turquoise and touch up some bleed spots along the way. It is just part of the process!
